Signs You Have Rats in Your Miami Attic

Scratching sounds at 2 AM? Droppings in the attic? Here's how to confirm a roof rat problem and what to do about it.

Attic interior inspection with flashlight

You heard something in the ceiling at 2 AM. A scratching sound. A scurrying. Maybe it's been happening for a few nights. Maybe longer. If you live in Miami-Dade County, there's a good chance you have roof rats in your attic. Here's how to know for sure.

Scratching and Scurrying Sounds at Night

This is the most common first sign. Roof rats are nocturnal. They're most active between dusk and dawn. The sounds you hear are rats running along rafters, gnawing on wood or wiring, and moving through insulation. The sounds are usually above the ceiling — in the attic space — but can also come from inside walls.

Important distinction: squirrels make similar sounds but are active during the day. If you hear activity at night, it's almost certainly rats.

Droppings

Rat droppings are one of the most reliable signs. Roof rat droppings are spindle-shaped (pointed at both ends), about half an inch long, and dark brown to black. You'll find them:

  • Along walls and beams in the attic
  • Near food sources (pet food, pantry items, fruit trees)
  • In corners and along baseboards
  • Inside cabinets or drawers (if rats have access to living spaces)

Fresh droppings are soft and dark. Old droppings are dry, hard, and gray. If you see both, the infestation has been ongoing for some time.

Gnaw Marks

Rats gnaw constantly to keep their ever-growing teeth worn down. In Miami attics, you'll see gnaw marks on:

  • Electrical wiring — this is a fire hazard. Rats chewing through wire insulation are a documented cause of house fires.
  • PVC plumbing pipes — can cause leaks that go undetected for months.
  • Wood beams and rafters — structural gnawing over time.
  • Ductwork — rats chew into A/C ducts, contaminating your air supply.
  • Storage items — boxes, holiday decorations, clothing.

Grease Marks (Rub Marks)

Rats have oily fur. They travel the same paths repeatedly — along walls, pipes, beams, and wires. Over time, this leaves dark, greasy smudges called rub marks. In an attic with active rats, you'll see these marks along rafters, near entry points, and on any surface the rats use as a runway.

Rub marks are useful because they tell us exactly where rats are traveling, which helps us place traps in the most effective locations.

Damaged Insulation

Rats shred insulation to create nesting material. If you look in your attic and see insulation that's been flattened, torn apart, tunneled through, or displaced, rats have been nesting there. Contaminated insulation — soaked with urine and covered in droppings — needs to be removed and replaced. This is a health issue, not just an aesthetic one. Professional attic cleanup handles this.

Musty or Ammonia-Like Odor

A strong, musky smell — especially when the A/C runs — often indicates a significant rat presence. Rat urine has a distinctive ammonia-like odor that accumulates in enclosed attic spaces. If you notice a strange smell coming from your vents or ceiling, rats may have contaminated your attic or ductwork.

Fruit Damage in Your Yard

This one's specific to Miami. If you have mango, avocado, citrus, or other fruit trees and you're finding fruit with chunks bitten out of it — especially fruit still on the tree — roof rats are feeding in your yard. Fruit trees are the number one attractant for roof rats in South Florida. Tree branches touching or near your roof provide a direct highway into your attic.

Visual Sighting

If you see a rat in your home during the day, the infestation is severe. Rats are nocturnal and avoid humans. Daytime activity means the population is large enough that rats are being pushed out of hiding by competition for space and food.

What to Do Next

If you've noticed any of these signs, don't wait. A single pair of rats can produce up to 1,500 offspring in a year. Every day you wait, the population grows, the damage increases, and the cleanup cost goes up.

Skip the DIY traps from the hardware store. Skip the poison. Poison creates more problems than it solves. You need a professional inspection to identify the species, locate entry points, and build a plan for trapping, exclusion, and cleanup.
